4 Healthy Holiday Eating Habits

Thanksgiving can be a beautiful day and a great opportunity to reconnect with the people who matter in your life. But it can also be a stressful time of year, especially if you’re trying to maintain your momentum with good nutritional habits. It’s entirely possible to enjoy healthy holiday eating without missing out on what matters—these tips can help you get the most out of your Thanksgiving Day and beyond.

4 Healthy Holiday Eating Habits

Start With Breakfast

Your first instinct on Thanksgiving may be to skip breakfast to save room for the main event. But eating a healthy breakfast is an eating habit you should continue even on Thanksgiving because it sets you up with more energy for the day and helps your metabolism. Plus, a nourishing breakfast can help ensure that you don’t overeat too much at dinner, making it easier to get your fill without going too overboard.

Stay Hydrated

Another healthy eating habit that you should keep up on Thanksgiving is making sure you drink enough water. Having at least eight glasses of water throughout the day can help you manage your hunger cravings, and it can help you avoid a late-afternoon crash when you should be taking advantage of time with family. Supplement water with energy-boosting beverages like coffee and tea, and you’ll be in good shape for the day ahead.

Pack Your Plate Smartly

When the table fills up and the good dinnerware comes out, be smart about how you fill your plate. Follow the rule of having half of your plate made up of vegetables and a quarter each of starchy foods and proteins, and you should be able to strike a good balance. Start with a good helping each—no more than a cup per—and give time for your stomach to catch up before you go in for seconds.

Don’t Be Afraid to Say No

There’s a lot of work that goes into preparing a Thanksgiving meal, and we all want to avoid offending the people who put in so much of that work. But if you’re trying to stick with healthy eating habits on Thanksgiving, you don’t have to give in to pressure to have more than your fill. If someone offers you another serving and you are satisfied, just say no thank them. Worst case, you can always offer to take home leftovers.
