The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen

Summertime is great if you love sunshine, but you need to make sure you’re smart when it comes to exposure to the sun. The importance of wearing sunscreen can’t be understated—it’s critical for preventing sunburn and keeping your skin healthy. If you regularly apply sunscreen and use the recommended SPF, you can look forward to more fun in the sun this summer and for years to come.

The Importance of Wearing Sunscreen

First and foremost, wearing sunscreen is important for preventing sunburn. Prolonged exposure to the sun can cause your skin to become severely burned, which causes redness and discomfort. If you get burnt bad enough, you may suffer symptoms like headache, nausea, and fever. This can ruin your summer plans in a hurry.

Direct exposure to ultraviolet rays can also cause your skin to prematurely age. Studies suggest that sun damage is the primary contributor to signs of aging like wrinkles. As such, it’s important that you keep your skin moisturized and wear sunscreen to prevent it from absorbing too much sunlight.

As for preventing skin cancers, the importance of wearing sunscreen is paramount. Regularly using a recommended SPF 15 sunscreen can significantly reduce your chances of getting squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma, keeping you healthier in the long term.

What’s the Recommended SPF for Sunscreen?

When it comes to sunscreen, you’ll have several options in terms of SPF, or sun protection factor, which is used to measure how much UV radiation will cause sunburn. The higher the SPF, the better your chances of preventing sunburn.

Dermatologists say that SPF 30 is the recommended minimum for sunscreen if you plan to spend an extended amount of time outdoors. If you’re exposed to sunlight indoors—say while driving on your road trip—SPF 30 is still the commonly recommended strength, but you may be fine to apply it once. If you’re playing or exercising outside, you should reapply sunscreen every two hours or so.
