September Newsletter

A Note From The Doctor:

Summer’s loose schedule is giving way to school buses, homework, and early alarms. It’s a natural reset point for the whole family, and it’s a great time to bring the same attention to your body’s routine. A few weeks of late nights, travel, and unstructured days can leave posture, sleep, and stress levels a little out of sync. Here’s how chiropractic care can help everyone start the school year off on the right foot.

The Backpack Problem

A loaded backpack is one of the most common sources of postural strain we see in kids each fall. Worn on one shoulder or packed too heavy, it pulls the spine out of alignment and can lead to shoulder, neck, and low back discomfort before the first quarter is even over.

  • Aim for a backpack weight under 10-15% of your child’s body weight
  • Use both straps and the waist belt if the bag has one
  • Bring your child in for a quick spinal check at the start of the year, especially for growing kids

Screens, Desks, and “Tech Neck”

Between classroom laptops, homework, and after-school screen time, kids and adults alike spend hours a day with their heads tilted forward. That posture adds significant load to the neck and upper back over time. Regular adjustments help restore mobility and take pressure off the joints that carry that extra strain.

Rebuilding a Routine the Body Can Rely On

Consistent sleep, regular meals, and a predictable schedule aren’t just good for grades and mood, they’re good for the nervous system. Chiropractic care supports that reset by helping the body handle stress more efficiently and by improving sleep quality, so the transition back to early mornings feels less like a shock and more like a rhythm.

A Good Time for a Family Check-In

September is a natural checkpoint for the whole family, not just the kids. If it’s been a while since your last visit, or if fall sports are starting up, now is a good time to come in for an adjustment and make sure everyone is heading into the school year feeling their best.

Why Water Is the Best Choice

💦 Keeps kids hydrated — Helps replace the fluids they lose throughout the day.

🧠 Supports concentration — Good hydration helps kids stay focused and alert at school.

⚡ Supports energy — Dehydration can contribute to tiredness and low energy.

🦷 Better for teeth — Water doesn’t contain the added sugar found in many juices and soft drinks.

🥤 Skip the sugary drinks — Water is a simple, healthy choice without unnecessary added sugar or calories.

Lunchbox Tip

Pack a reusable water bottle every day! Encourage kids to drink water throughout the day—not just when they’re thirsty.

New Technique Spotlight

Flexion-Distraction

Each month, we’re spotlighting one of the techniques we use in the office so you can better understand what to expect and why we use it.

This month: Flexion-Distraction

Flexion-distraction is a gentle, hands-on technique commonly used for disc issues, sciatica, and general low back pain and stiffness.

During flexion-distraction, you lie face down on a specialized table. The table gently stretches and flexes your lower back while your chiropractor applies light, rhythmic pressure to the spine. Unlike a traditional adjustment, there is no twisting or forceful thrusting—and typically no popping. The table does much of the work, gently creating movement and space between the vertebrae.

What is it trying to do?

  • Reduce pressure on compressed discs and irritated nerves by gently creating more space between the vertebrae
  • Improve motion in the joints of the low back without forceful thrusting
  • Promote healthy movement of fluid around the discs
  • Relax muscles and reduce tension around the affected area
  • Prepare the spine for the rest of the adjustment by gently loosening and relaxing the area

Flexion-distraction can be especially helpful for patients experiencing disc bulges or herniations, sciatica, low back pain, or stiffness. However, we also use it on many patients because it provides a gentle way to introduce movement into the low back without putting a lot of pressure on the spine.

By relaxing and mobilizing the area first, it can also make the rest of the adjustment more comfortable and effective.

Gentle movement. Less pressure. Better motion.
