Trick-or-Treat Safety for Halloween

Halloween night is just a week away, so now is the perfect time to make sure you’re familiar with some essential trick-or-treat safety tips. If you know some of the keys for costume safety, getting around the neighborhood, and taking care of your feet before heading out, you’ll be able to enjoy the spookiest night of the year to the fullest.

Trick-or-Treat Safety Tips for Halloween

Costume Safety

One of the biggest joys of Halloween is being able to dress up as something cool or scary. And while style may be a big focus when it comes to picking a Halloween costume, you’ll want to heed some basic safety tips to ensure that going trick-or-treat is a total success.

Masks can look awesome, but they also make it hard to see. To ensure that you and your trick-or-treaters have full visibility, try to opt for non-toxic makeup instead. You should also make sure everyone in your group is easier to see, which you can do by using reflective tape, glowsticks, or flashlights.

Keep the Group Together

Even if you’re just planning to go to the end of the block and back, you’ll want to have a planned route for trick-or-treating and make sure everyone knows the plan. That ensures that the group stays together and can come back together if someone lags behind or gets lost in the shuffle.

If you’re heading up your trick-or-treat group, a simple safety tip would be to do a headcount every few houses or so and make sure everyone is where you can see them. This is especially important if you’re splitting up into smaller groups, and it’s a good tip to give to your teens if you’re entrusting them with the responsibility of leading their siblings. While you should avoid using electronic devices along the way, make sure that everyone in the group has access to a phone just in case.

Get Yourself Prepared to Go Door-to-Door

Even if you’re regularly active, a night of trick-or-treating can take quite a toll on your feet and legs. If you want to avoid shin splints, foot pain, or aggravating a knee injury, make sure you take time to stretch before heading out. And even if they don’t work with your costume, comfortable shoes with good arch support are a must if you’ll be on your feet a lot.

For extra support when it comes to pain prevention and relief, consider a chiropractic adjustment or massage before or after you go trick-or-treating (or both). And if your little ones are feeling it after their trick-or-treat outing, pediatric chiropractic care can be a big help.
