Spinal & Postural Screenings

Spinal and postural screenings are important tools used by our chiropractors to discover neuromusculoskeletal issues before them cause serious problems. These quick screenings can uncover posture issues and spinal misalignments you aren’t even aware are there before they can develop into an injury or chronic neck or back pain.

Our bodies are designed to have the pelvis, rib cage, and head balanced upon each other. When a patient doesn’t practice good posture, the spine may deviate from its healthy and normal position. Poor posture has been associated with the development and progression of many spinal diseases and injuries including:

  • Muscle injury

  • Chronic headaches

  • Disc injury

  • Lifting injuries

  • Sports-related injuries

  • Back pain

  • Neck pain

  • Shoulder injuries

When poor posture is practiced in the adolescent years, it has been found to be a major cause of chronic pain and early arthritis in adulthood.

Screening Process

A posture screening has two main components: a dynamic and static postural analysis. The static analysis involves assessing pain and mobility issues by evaluating a patient’s elevation posture, rotation posture, pelvic tilt, and anterior pelvic tilt.

A dynamic postural analysis checks if there are any issues with spinal alignment while the patient is in motion. In many cases, the body will change the way it moves to compensate for deviations in spinal alignment. For example, improper spinal alignment can cause the patient to redistribute weight and favor one leg over the other. These changes may seem slight, but they can cause pain in other areas of the body by pulling tendons, ligaments, and muscles out of alignment during movement.

A dynamic postural analysis will require the patient to:

  • Raise their hands above their head

  • Stand on one leg

  • Sit on the edge of a seat, stand up, and then sit down again

  • Attempt a push up

During the screening, one of our experienced chiropractors will check that the shoulders are even and that the legs are at the same length and also how the patient holds their head.

At Somerset Hills Chiropractic, we offer spinal and postural screenings to detect and correct posture problems before they become serious. These are provided at community events, area malls, health fairs and places of employment. Contact us today to arrange a screening at your workplace or event.
